Who we are

The Pumping Marvellous Foundation (PMF) is the UK’s patient-led Heart Failure charity. Founded by a heart failure patient whose experiences whilst rehabilitating, shaped the Foundation’s goals and principles of a patient-centric charity focused on improved patient outcomes.

The Pumping Marvellous Foundations beneficiaries are all people who are living with heart failure, together with their family and friends. The Pumping Marvellous Foundation’s goal is to deliver HOPE to its recipients through the facilitation of better outcomes by cross-working and advocating at a local, regional, national, and international level. Working hand-in-hand with all stakeholders to deliver better pathways and be the patient voice of progression. Our services include patient-driven solutions, created by patients which are guided but not policed by the Foundation, available in a printed and online format.

The Pumping Marvellous Foundation is funded through donations and fundraising by individuals, support from the NHS, charitable organisations, corporate sponsorship and hands-off grants.

Up to 1,000,000 heart failure patients, their families and carers in the UK qualify for assistance. The Foundation has no bias towards specific subgroups. Heart failure is an umbrella of conditions and spans all socio-economic groups; therefore, our support is varied and tailored to the needs of patients.

The Foundation is based in the City of Preston, in the UK. It has a network of regional volunteers, called ‘Patient Educators’, who deliver the core messages of the charity and actively participate in campaigns, publications, distribution of literature and local relationship building. In addition, we have a robust online presence which enables the Foundation to reach out and catalyse progression in heart failure care with more engagement with clinicians, patients, and their families.

Heart Failure is a progressive condition and needs managing. Approximately 75% of heart failure diagnoses are caused by persistent hypertension or Myocardial Infarction (heart attacks). Recently, people are managing to survive with better intervention techniques regarding heart attacks but coming out the other side with heart failure. The prognosis of heart failure patients is less favourable than most common cancers. Therefore, mortality is significant and hospital readmission levels are high. Heart failure admissions equate to over 2% of the total admissions in A&E. Heart failure is treatable and manageable with the proper care, including treatments, and self-management/self-care. The Foundation’s core value is to promote HOPE to people living with heart failure, and their carers and family, promoting self-care and education through peer-to-peer coaching and support. We HOPE to impact by reducing the ever-increasing burden on the health economy by getting patients and their families to manage their conditions better through self-management/self-care.

Our services and products improve the ability of heart failure patients to self-manage, recognising the early symptoms and self-interventions and steps that can be taken to alleviate common symptoms. An investment in the Pumping Marvellous Foundation is a small investment compared to ignoring the heart failure problem.
