NHS Long Term Plan

NHS Long Term Plan

Pumping Marvellous Foundation Statement around the NHS Long Term Plan

The Pumping Marvellous Foundation read with interest the NHS Long Term Plan and how we as a movement should not focus solely on the paragraph relating to heart failure but look further afield to how we can segment the plan and take forward the opportunities that it offers to make significant strides in redefining the provisioning of care and treatment in heart failure.

We welcome the focus in the plan on better supporting multi-disciplinary teams. The plans ambition to improve early assessment, access to heart failure nurses, primary care teams and particularly personalised care planning is commendable. However, we do appreciate fulfilling these goals is going to be challenging when considering the current resources that are available, especially human resources, system design change and increasing cost in treatment where the prevalence of heart failure is increasing. We believe working together to achieve aligned aims has a significant benefit ultimately to the patient.

Where we felt there could have been an improvement would be in the focusing on natriuretic peptides around the efficiency of the diagnosis and the potential cost-effectiveness of this investment. It still remains that not everybody has access to natriuretic peptides.

The Pumping Marvellous Foundation is exploring other aspects of the NHS Long Term Plan which focus on –

  • The integration of care systems
  • Expanded community MDT’s aligned with the new primary care networks
  • Empowering people to take advantage of social prescribing and the wide-open access to presenting information digitally to the patient and family
  • The development of personalised care plans and records

The plan specifically mentions that it wishes to see voluntary organisations being central to the design and delivery of the above.

We relish this opportunity to formally interlock with the NHS in succeeding and making significant strides in these specific workstreams. We firmly believe that by bringing the patients perspectives into play, the NHS will ultimately benefit ensuring that radical and successful transformation can take place within the next ten years, providing the foundation for effective management of the increasing number of people who will be living with heart failure.
